Connie & Isaac’s colourful & retro DIY Backyard Beach Wedding in Cornwall - captured on film & digital

wedding photography captured on holga with the ocean in the background and bride wearing her mothers vintage wedding dress

When Connie & Isaac got in touch, they explained that they didn’t want a typical formal wedding gallery. They wanted something really offbeat and candid that felt scrapbooky, arty and casual. Something that was far from traditional and more rough-around-the-edges focusing on moments, fun, emotion and played with a variety of different types of cameras. They opted for our Hybrid package (film and digital mixed with more weight on the analogue side of things) and based on what they told us, we brought along the Holga for those really low-fi moments (like the shot above) the Contax g2 and Nikon F3 for a variety of 35mm film, the drone for some sweeping shots that showed off the location and just the one digital camera to capture those all-important moments. We loved their brief and the results so we’re excited to share it with you all and some of our favourite captures that sum up the vibe of their super fun, DIY marquee wedding at Harlyn Bay which took place on what was easily the hottest day in August and resulted in everyone getting in the sea for a swim.

The wedding took place at the Granny’s family home which had the most jaw dropping views over the iconic Harlyn Bay with its own private path leading right down to the beach. Every element of the day was DIY with the bridesmaids making their own bouquets from tropical flowers (The theme was very much retro beach party) and bright pops of colour with a pink and yellow colour combination (my two favourite colours!) One of my favourite parts, was that the bride actually wore her mother’s wedding dress and it was PERFECT. Her bridesmaids did her hair for her while the tunes played and the champagne flowed and Sabzi deli cooked up a feast for the wedding dinner.

They performed a personal ceremony in the marquee which featured elements from Hawaiian ceremonies (Their honeymoon destination) before a sunny cocktail reception with DJ providing the tunes while guests soaked up the sun and wandered down to the beach.

This wedding really did have all the beach party vibes and their brief really made the most out of the colours - the rich blueness of the August ocean, the pastel evening light captured on Portra and the grittiness of the Contax’s direct flash and all the bright colours of the guests outfits. Jon and I love teaming up for hybrid weddings and this was our first one, the one that encouraged us to add it to our packages and make it available for other people wanting a blend of film and digital.
